Piercing Hundred Lotus-Leaves - One at a time AS085 [Video Post]

Piercing Hundred Lotus-Leaves | One at a time

One at a time!

Watch the video.

PIERCING HUNDRED LOTUS-LEAVES
utpala-shata-patra-vyatibhéda-vat
उत्पल-शत-पत्र-व्यतिभेदवत्

"Like the simultaneous piercing of a bundle of hundred lotus-leaves."
Lotus leaves are very soft. Softer than the already-soft stems of lotus. A bundle of hundred lotus leaves can be pierced with a sharp needle in no time, almost instantaneously, and yet the actual process is linear. An example, which is important from another aspect as well, in Shlokavārtika says, "You say the example of lamp and light as an instance of simultaneity of cause and effect, but still there is a finite little time, just like piercing hundred lotus leaves." This also means that even then it was understood that light has a finite speed, just as it was known that sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach the Earth.

~ One at a time.

Language notes: उत्पल-शत-पत्र-व्यतिभेद-वत् = utpala_shata_patra_vyatibhédavat | utpala = lotus. shata = hundred. patra = leaf. vyatibhéda = (vi-ati-bhéda) simultaneous piercing

“When you take that position, its responsibilities also come with it.”

You cannot just have the rights and power of the position, you need to take the duties as well. Everyone wants to be a doctor, engineer, IAS officer, lawyer, minister or the CEO, SVP, Director etc. But these positions are not just of power and money; they bring with them the responsibilities. You need to put in lot of hard work to be worthy of these positions of influence and impact.

Smile, for you are worth it! - अमंत्रमक्षरं नास्ति

there is no sound that is not a mantra, no plant that is not medicinal |
there is no person unworthy, what is lacking is an 'enabler' ||

अमंत्रमक्षरं नास्ति नास्ति मूलमनौषधम्‌ ।
अयोग्यः पुरुषो नास्ति योजकस्तत्र दुर्लभः॥

amantramakSharaM nAsti, nAsti moolamanauShdhaM |
ayogyaH puruSho nAsti, yojakastatra durlabhaH ||

Akshara - Mantra

Each and every sound can be a mantraM, to be meditated upon. But for that one needs to understand the acoustics of the mouth, vibrations of sounds, meaning of the letters of the language. Specially in Sanskrit each letter sound has a meaning.
E.g. the first consonants
  • क (ka) means - brahmA, viShNu, kAmadeva, agni (fire), vAyu (wind), sUrya (sun) etc.
  • ख (kha) means - sky (khaga = those that move in the sky = birds), heaven, senses of perception, field (farm), void
  • ग (ga) means - gandharva (celestial singers, dancers), adjective for gaNesha (gaN gaNapataye namaH)

Plant - Medicine

Every plant has some medicinal use. Even the poisonous ones have use in fighting venom. A pharmaceutical company would be better testimony of it even for modern medicines, what to say of Ayurvedic medicines which were prepared from plants directly, and were heavily plant based.

Person - Usefulness

And what was that old adage - "You are never totally useless, you can always be used as a bad example!"

Jokes apart, everyone has some qualities that they can contribute to the society. We are all born with some innate nature and acquire skills. We all are doing some karma all the time! Even the so called bad karma doers can be used positively. Police uses ex-criminals to help them find new ones. A master lock-picker may help a security company to make better locks?

Then one may wonder why are so many of us dissatisfied with our job? Here it might be good to remember what Steve Jobs of Apple said -- 'For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.'

The reason for most of the unhappy workers is that they have not matched their INTEREST and SKILL with the job, but only matched the SALARY with their EXPECTED lifestyle.

So either you should realize on your own, or one to whom you report.

In all this what is missing? What is lacking?
One who could see the worth in the sound, the plant or the person. This also means that a mantra to have full impact (vibration, meaning) a knowledgeable person is needed. Similarly an Ayurvedic vaidya (doctor) could find use of any plant. And a good manager is one who knows the strength and weakness of his team members and assigns them duties according to their skills and interest.

A yojaka is one who manages, connects, enables, organizes. one who properly 'connects' the 'parts' to make the 'whole' functional at its best.

Smile, for you are worth it!

Source

Many have sked for the source of this shloka. This shloka is only found in subhAShita-sangraHa - quotation collections, and not in other works. Following are the ones I have verified, there could be some older editions of the works:
  • subhAShita-ratna-bhANDAgAra - by kAshinAtha pANDuranga Parab - 1929 edition (page 163)
  • subhAShita-ratnAkara - by kRiShNa shAstrii bhAtavaDekara- 1888 edition (page 233)
  • subhAShita-sudhA-ratna-bhANDAgAra - by Pt. shivadatta kaviratna - 1929 (page 485)

And now the language aspects of the shloka -

amantramakSharaM = a + mantraM + akSharaM = sound (akSharaM) [that is] not (a) mantraM

mantram = mananaM trAyate = that which when meditated/pondered upon liberates (saves); a secret; a formula
akShraM = a + kSharaM = that which doesn't decay, can't be broken further = letter of the alphabet (language element can't be further broken)
kSharaM = decay
kShaaraM = alkali (as in chemistry, alkali and acid)

nAsti = na + asti = is (asti) not (na)

moolamanauShdhaM = moolaM + an + auShadhaM
moolaM = root (hence a plant whose root we are talking about)
auShadhaM = medicine
an + auShadhaM = not medicinal

ayogyaH = a + yogyaH = not (a) worthy (yogya)
yogya = from yuj (yoga) = worthy of union (yuj) with the work (worthy, suitable, well matched to the requirement)

puruSho = man, person
yojakastatra = yojakaH + tatra
yojakaH = one who unites, arranges, manages (saMyojakaH)
same root (yuj) as of yoga for connecting the person and the project.

durlabhaH = duH + labhaH = difficult accessible = not easily found, difficult to get.

SMART goals - यथाशक्ति चिकीर्षन्ति

people with wisdom wish to do (projects) as per their ability, execute as per their ability and do not consider anything small or trivial (don't disrespect any task).

यथाशक्ति चिकीर्षन्ति यथाशक्ति च कुर्वते ।
न किञ्चिदवमन्यन्ति नराः पण्डितबुद्धयः ॥ 1-26

yathA-shakti chikIrShanti, yathA-shakti cha kurvate |
na kinchidavamanyanti, narAH paNDita-buddhayaH ||

this is 26th shloka from chapter 1 of vidura-neeti, an excellent, stand alone section of the grand epic mahAbhArata. in this the great emperor dhRitarAShTra - whose sons were the villains making life miserable for their cousins pANDavas - is extremely restless about tomorrow's court appearance of the messenger, sanjaya, who brought the message from pANDava side.

a disturbed emperor calls for his wise minister and brother vidura at late hours and asks for words of wisdom regarding dharma (right conduct) and artha (politics).

the wise vidura bares all his wisdom for the benefit of the emperor, but sadly, to no avail, as the deadly war does take place.

Worthiness of men and women- अश्वः शस्त्रं शास्त्रं वीणा

horse, weapon, science, musical instrument, speech, and man and woman.
(they all) become worthy or unworthy, based on who gets to use (employ/utilize) them.

अश्वः शस्त्रं शास्त्रं वीणा वाणी नरश्च नारी च ।
पुरुषविशेषं प्राप्य भवन्ति योग्यायोग्याश्च ॥

ashwaH shastraM shAstraM vINA, vANI narashcha nArI cha |
puruSha-visheShaM prApya, bhavanti yogyAyogyAshcha ||

the arabian horse lost the race.
the gun misfired.
the science of nuclear weapons.
Cacophonix the bard (Asterix comics anyone?)
the politician lost election after the bad speech.
he failed.
she failed.

whose fault is it?

in mahAbhArata, a horse trader from west (arabia?) comes to court of emperor shAntanu, to see if anyone could ride his fine horses, specially one uncontrollable white steed. everyone failed, but devavrata, the future grandsire bhIShma, did it. so, whose fault? horse's? you need a special person to control a wild horse.

why the control on deadly weapons? without proper security and training, they might get stolen or misused/abused. that is why the CTBT and IAEA controlling the world's nuclear weaponry.

what percent of the population is scientist? not everyone can discover or invent new things. and how are the inventions used? chemical weapons don't make chemistry bad, but it the bad user (terrorist/dictator/or super power).

it is not the fault of the lute that Cacophonix can't play it. if you don't tune the musical instrument, the guitar, how can you get good music?

similarly for people. if the person and skill sets are not matched properly, how can anyone be successful? if the credit for success goes to the leader, the blame for failure should also go to the leader.

here is the big management mantra!
proper resource allocation doesn't mean just the head count, but the head "content" as well! it is very important to recognize the skills properly, and then assign people. the talents need to be recognized and used appropriately.

there are few more related shlokas, and we will cover them as time comes.

now the shloka at hand:

ashwaH = horse; other words - haya, turanga

shastraM = weapon; instrument, apparatus, iron, steel
weapons were made of iron and steel. indian steel, wootz steel, was perfected even before the roman empire and was used to supply swords to the roman army!
[from root 'shas' to cut, kill, destroy.]
compare to astraM - a weapon that is thrown like arrow, spear etc.

shAstraM = science.
interesting note:
from root shAs = rule, reign. [cf. shAsanaM = rule, reign of a king]
so shAstraM = the science, the pursuit of truths, are like command of the king.
i.e. how can truth be disobeyed!
interesting insight into the fact that science and "religion" or "god-stuff" was never in confrontation. shAstra-ukti - statement of science - was respected, revered.
shAstrI = one who is adept in the shAstra. also a degree in sanskrit studies, like paNDita, viSharada, shAshtrI etc.

vINA = one of the earliest musical instrument of india; divine saraswatI is shown holding it, celestial sage nArada carries it. music has a very long tradition in india.

vANI = speech. from root 'vAk' - speech.
other words - vAgdevI - divinity of speech (saraswatI), vAda = -ism; vAda-vivAda = debate.

narashcha = naraH (man) + cha (and)
nArI = woman

puruSha-visheShaM prApyaM = 'gotten by'/'given in charge of' (prApyaM) the special/specific (visheSham) person (puruSha)

bhavanti = happen, become (plural) [from bhava - to be, happen]

yogyAyogyAshcha =
yogya + ayogya -> yogyAyogya
plural -> yogyAyogyAH ; + ch -> yogyAyogyAshcha

yogya = worthy; from yoga-> yogya, i.e. worthy of union/use/utilization
ayogyaH = not worthy
cha = and

note:
the second line of the shloka appears in hitopadesh (2-75) as:
पुरुषविशेषं प्राप्यं हि, भवन्ति योग्या अयोग्याश्च ॥
the problem with this is that now the number of vowels (or sounds, varNa) is 6+2+1=9 and 3 + 2 + 4 = 9
instead of 8 and 8. i think it is an error, and the way to make it 8 + 8 would be as i have put it.
if someone has the correct definite form of the shloka, please let me know.

also, this shloka might be from vidura-neeti, but i am unable to find it in my copy of the same.
vidura-neeti is another master gem of a book, but its sanskrit is not always simple. so i will have to cherry pick only those that have vocab and simple sanskrit.
